How to set up Medical ID and emergency contacts on a parent's phone

Step-by-step setup so first responders can see allergies, medications and emergency contacts from a locked iPhone or Android phone.

If your parent has an emergency, first responders can see key health information and emergency contacts without unlocking the phone, but only if it's set up first.

iPhone: Medical ID

Apple's guide: Set up and view your Medical ID.

  1. Open the Health app.
  2. Tap the profile picture, then Medical ID.
  3. Tap Get Started or Edit.
  4. Fill in medical conditions, medications, allergies and blood type if known.
  5. Add Emergency Contacts (you and one backup).
  6. Turn on Show When Locked.
  7. Save. Then lock the phone and check it appears from the emergency screen.
iPhone and Apple Watch can also offer Crash Detection and Emergency SOS. See Apple's guide on [Crash Detection](https://support.apple.com/en-us/104959).

Android: emergency information

  1. Open Settings and search for Safety & emergency (or "Emergency information").
